Livelihood Options for Disaster Risk Reduction in South Asia
The project strategy is community-based, with strong emphasis on local-level capacity building for better coping of natural hazards like flood, drought, landslide and earthquake.
It has generated copious amounts of research on the link of disaster risk and livelihood. Research was conducted in five South Asian countries- India , Pakistan , Bangladesh , Nepal and Sri Lanka . Community action, whether earthquake-proof housing in India or Rainwater harvesting tanks in Sri Lanka were decided upon the research results.
This knowledge-both academic and practical-forms the basis of the South Asia Policy on Disaster Risk and Livelihoods.
• Capacity building and training component reviewed and revised the Community-Based Disaster Management (CBDM) methodology to train TOT. Localized (CBDM) modules were introduced in India and Sri Lanka through Livelihood Options project. A Bangkok-based training of trainers in July 2000 by ADPC prepared local organizations in India and Sri Lanka to carry out the CBDM courses in vernacular. Duryog Nivaran material was extensively used for training and DN concepts formed the basis of the curricular material.
• Meanwhile, using the research generated by Livelihood Options, a second regional initiative is being carried out in Nepal , Pakistan and Bangladesh to fight floods through community-based strategies. Summary of project themes and locations
